All plants need watering to be established. Planting in the fall after the hottest days of summer is over is a great strategy to reducing establishment watering. After the fall, the next best time is April.
To establish: Bare-root plant in unamended soil. Then 1) water daily for 4-5 days, 2) deeply water every other day for a week, 3) deeply water twice a week for two weeks, and finally 4) deeply water every week for a month, monitoring for drought stress and supplementing as needed.
Depending on weather conditions plants may establish sooner. Always water in the very early morning or in the evening.
We recommend starting small and doing things one spot at a time.
We also recommend having some kind of mulching strategy. In sunny spots, we’ve found that a thin layer (1-2”) pea gravel and squeegee (rock fragments) work best. Planting densely or throwing down fast-growing native seed like Rocky Mtn. bee plant or annual sunflower can also reduce sun exposure on your new plants, while also getting flowers and pollinators and birds into your yard sooner.
For shady spots like the immediate north side of fences and structures, a thin layer of wood mulch works well.
In general, the plants we sell will need only very minimal supplemental watering once established — if they’re planted in the right conditions. Consult each plant’s page for sun conditions it prefers. -
